Meet ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½’s Class of 2025 Valedictorian: Virginia Rodríguez Verdín Galeazzi
ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ is pleased to introduce Virginia Rodríguez Verdín Galeazzi, this year’s Class of 2025 valedictorian for Spring Convocation held on July 3 at Queen Elizabeth Theatre.
Called “Vicky” by all those who know her, Vicky is graduating from ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½’s Hospitality Management diploma program. She has received several awards including the Stephen Darling Hospitality Management Award and the Hotel Association of Vancouver Emerging Leader Award. In this Q&A, Vicky reflects on her ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ journey, what’s next after graduation, and a few of her favourite spots at ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½.
First, congratulations on being ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½’s Valedictorian for Class of 2025! Can you tell us how you found out you were selected and what went through your mind in that moment?
Well, I got the email, and I had to read it not once but at least three times to believe that it wasn't a dream. I was so overcome with emotion and so honoured. It was such a sweet surprise and one of those special moments that I will never forget. I was and I am so thankful and even a little nervous, but mostly just grateful for the opportunity to speak on behalf of my classmates.
Prior to ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½, you worked in the corporate world in Mexico City. What inspired you to choose ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½, and what drew you to your program?
As an international student, I was looking for a college that not only offered a good education, but also a welcoming atmosphere. When I came across ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½, I just had an immediate feeling and thought to myself, “this is my choice”. The Hospitality Management degree was of interest to me as it combined practical skills with strong industry knowledge, and Vancouver is the perfect city to study hospitality. I also liked that the program was applied and connected to real-life experience.

Can you share a favourite memory that really stands out from your time here?
One of my favorite memories was the day in my Restaurant Operation class that I was named manager of The Bistro. It was stressful, exciting, and so much fun all at the same time. I realized how much I learned, grew, and could be proud of what I accomplished individually and as a team. That day reminded me that learning is not just taking classes and notes. It's about doing something to be a better leader and putting into practice everything you learn. It's about going out with my peers to innovate, break expectations, and think out of the box, looking for a better version of ourselves every day and becoming better leaders.
Where do you work now, and how has the program helped to get you started in this career?
I am currently happily working as a barista at JJ Bean Coffee Roasters. The program prepared me to provide the best customer service experience with professionalism and integrity. It helped me develop important industry connections, life skills, and time management. It also helped me to communicate in a second language, and I am very grateful for that because it is helping me to continue to grow not only in my professional life, but also to connect with people and expand my network.
"ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ is a community, a great one where you will be seen, motivated, and challenged in the best way possible."
What ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ services or supports made a big difference for you during your studies?
The instructors were always helpful. Whenever I had a question or needed additional help, they were always happy to help me. I could see and feel that there was always someone there to guide me. I also appreciated the , which always helped answering my questions. One thing I definitely appreciate is the welcoming and friendly attitude at ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½, especially since I was a new immigrant to Canada.

You will learn so much not just about the field, but also about yourself. Don't be afraid, take every opportunity to participate and have faith in the process. Okay, before we let you go, just a few more rapid fire questions...
Best place to grab a bite to eat on campus: The cafeteria always saved me when I needed something quick between classes.
Favourite place to unwind on campus: The became my little peaceful corner. It is quiet and somehow just being there helped me feel more grounded, whether I was studying, reading, or just taking a breather.
Finish this sentence: “In five years, I hope to be…”
…growing in my hospitality career, managing my own team, and making people feel as welcome and supported as I did during my time at ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½.
